ABOUT CHEYE

For this final exhibition work, I have been creating a collection of drawings and paintings as a response to abstract expressionism. I have been inspired in particular by the artist Cy Twombly who incorporates mythological storytelling into his expressive and energetic works, and also Robert Motherwell whose work I would describe as blocky and allegoric. In my own work, I have been delving into the surface of things quite literally, using scraps of paper and card, implements to scratch and mark the surface, and mediums such as household paints, pencils and crayons creating layers, washes and areas of colour.

Sometimes, my work is based on my mood, and the colour can reflect this. I don’t often introduce much colour and if I do, it is not superficial, and generally has some significance or meaning, or emotion. However, I want to viewer to approach the work in their own way, either from a purely aesthetical, or perhaps psychological perspective, but without forcing my intentions on them.
